Wow, what a week we have had. It feels like we have been on an emotional rollercoaster for years, and now we coast...

Coast through the week...coast through Shabbat...and now we can coast into Sunday morning with this beautiful community davvenen tomorrow morning (Sunday, 11am EST/8am PST).

There is a peace and a calm I think many of us feel, which we can bring together tomorrow. We invite you to join us to davven, to embrace love and joy in our lives.

Brachos and Books is a program of the HINENI Jewish Community. This month we meet on Sunday, January 17 at Noon EST/9am PST.I hope that your Shabbat was restful and full of hope and light.

Now that I have observed Havdalah (truly my favorite part of Shabbat), I am thinking about the Brachos and Books meeting, and working on the notes and prompts for our discussion.

At the moment, I am working on the notes, so they will be changing, probably even in the morning tomorrow as I think more on the chapter and consider things we might like to discuss.

Also, remember that the prompts are truly just that: prompts to discussion. We should not feel limited in our discussion to things I put in the notes--the discussion is open to where we take it. I know that last month some of you appreciated this, and I want to simply remind you that if I do not put something in my notes, it does not mean we cannot discuss it. And just because something is in my notes also does not mean we HAVE to discuss it! Let's get together and talk and see where we go.

Please let me know if you have questions! And as always, we do want people to read, because it definitely will make for better discussion. But if the month got away from you, do not worry about it--please come even if you just want to listen.

Heartfelt Torah Noon EST/9am PST
The sun is going down so early today - it is that season, when Shabbat starts at what seems like the middle of the afternoon. It is always a little early for dinner when we light candles, but I don’t mind the glow of the Shabbat Lights as I set the table and put the finishing touches on our dinner. There is something cozy and comforting that Shabbat gives us at this darker stretch of the year. I am touched by the wisdom of our tradition: That when we need it most, the lights of Shabbat glow earlier and earlier, bringing extra light and warmth to our hearts and homes. This has been a tough year, and while this Shabbat is the darkest of the year, we can light our candles tonight with the heartened knowledge that next week the lighting will happen a little earlier, and the week after a bit earlier than that.

This Sunday, we will be back to our normal programming after our short “winter break,” which means we will have Heart-Centered Torah. The focus of the study will be on the beginning of Parashat Vayechi (beginning at Genesis 47:28): Jacob faced the possibility of death many times throughout his life, but now in his old age, having moved to Egypt, reconnected with his long, lost son Joseph, and settled into a peaceful life with his family all around him, Jacob becomes aware of his mortality in a new way. He has lived a full life with many adventures and struggles. How will he prepare for this final chapter of his life, and what might this reading inspire in us as 2020 comes to a close?

Davvening Shacharit with HINENI 11am EST/8am PST

The final verse of the Maftir for the triennial cycle in this week's Torah Portion (Vayishlach) is Genesis 35:15,
Jacob gave the site, where God had spoken to him, the name of Bethel.

Bethel...Beit-El...The House of God.
On Shabbat, we can also call our homes "Beit-El," because we invite the Sabbath Bride in through the kavanah we create: Cleaning, the smells of the challah, the lighting of candles and singing L'cha Dodi. I feel very much right now that my home is definitely about to take on that status. So even when I cannot go to the shul tonight or tomorrow morning, God is in this place! And I DO know!
We wish a beautiful, blessed Shabbat Shalom to you all. Please take some time to listen to the Reflection on Psalm 1:4,
